bonhoeffer

By admin,

the more than i dig into our writing, the more that i’m craving to read really good books. i hope to share some of them on here, and for now, all of my reading time is consumed by this guy:
dietrich bonhoeffer
in particular, his life captured by eric metaxas, who we recently had the pleasure of listening to at an event.
if you’re not familiar with bonhoeffer, it is so worth the read. he was a German Christian during the time of Hitler’s reign and was eventually assassinated for his involvement in a plot to kill Hitler.
this is 600+ pages well spent. i’ve been convicted and motivated. not only did Hitler hate Jews, but he also hated anyone who was disabled. that’s close to home.
i want this to be said of us as well as it was of bonhoeffer: “whatever he had and whatever he was, he made that accessible to others.”
it’s scary to write our book and to proclaim God’s worth in marriage and in disabilities, especially in this culture. but as this author said while we watched him at the podium, he came to a realization on his writing journey that this is God’s book.
our book is God’s book too.

Wednesdays are for fasting

By admin,

Soon after Ian’s accident, our church started fasting for him regularly on Wednesdays. I’ve tried to keep that schedule over the years.

Recently Jen and I have been fasting from social media each week. It seems silly, but it serves to prompt many prayers.

If you’d like, we’d love for anyone to join us. Fast from chocolate, or all foods, or anything that serves as a reminder to pray.

Specific requests: that Ian would grow strength in walking and that we would know God’s love more each day.

Thank you.

it’s stealing all of my brain cells

By admin,

clearly we’ve been lacking in posts lately, and while i’d like to say that it’s because we’re just so busy, that wouldn’t be honest. what we have been doing though is trying to get into the habit of writing regularly for the book, which has unfortunately consumed a significant amount of my brain cells, which affects our blog posts. so as we take on this new adventure, the blog may suffer, but please know that we still covet your prayers.

hope to be writing soon!

it's fall

By admin,

I think that it’s supposed to be fall but I hear lots of crickets outside our bedroom window. The mornings are getting colder though and so are the evenings. I want to like this season, an excuse for outdoor fires and Sunday football for Ian and leggings with thick sweaters and moccasins.

But I just can’t do it. Because fall is when Ian’s car slid under an suv and is when Steve died. Sunday marks six years since Ian’s accident and eight days after that will be three years since we’ve seen Steve.

And so autumn, you are beautiful but you hold in you so much sadness. Too many leaf-strewn drives to the ICU. For that, I’ll be ok when you’ve passed.

What if

By admin,

“Ian if the role were reversed and I had the tbi, would you still be with me?”

“yes”

“why?”

“because you’re more than a brain.”

footloose and cancer-free

By admin,

tonight we will be having our final anniversary celebration, releasing two lanterns into the sky at our wedding site. Our family surprised us with these lanterns at our wedding and so each year we plan to release one for each year of marriage.

tonight we’re thankful for two years, two incredible families and a cancer free doctor’s report.

Thank you, as always

many rooms

By admin,

“Ian you know what makes me really sad?”

“what?”

“I wish we could dance together.”

“I wish we could too.”

“will you dance with me in heaven?”

“the first room that we get to, I’ll dance with you.”

Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
