he walks again

We waited for five weeks after clearance from the surgeon. We waited for his brace to be approved by insurance so that he could safely start to rehab.

we were praying, and the 828 board was praying, that the brace would come before vacation.

because there are two weddings this week, very special people joining their lives, and he needed to be able to walk and dance.

and the day before leaving, it came. And this morning, after an incredible book release party with some of our dearest friends, he walked out the front steps of our new bungalow for the first time.

“amazing. It feels normal,” he says. “The old Ian.”

and we can’t help but be grateful for our dear surgeon who God used to make it possible. Who took the chance on a rare surgery because he believed that Ian was strong enough and courageous enough to learn to walk again.

and we can’t help but be grateful for our therapist who got him to this point.

and our caregiver. Who every single day does more and loves more than his job description requires.

this morning we leave our bungalow with more hope for our future. And more hope for #walkbythirty.

thank you for helping us to get here through prayers, love, and faith.

all our best,

The Murphys

  1. I have been following your story since I first heard of you both in the news. I’ve prayed for you, and your life-story is so inspiring; when we’re going through something tough, there is always someone going through something tougher. You’re an inspiration to me, through the tough time I’m going through…

    Ian and Larissa,

Praise God. Praise you and praise Ian. This list is long, but so is the journey.

oops, clicked enter before I was finished… I am inspired every time you post. I will continue to pray for you, God Bless.

  5. Words can not express the joy I have for Ian & Larissa. I just finished “eight twenty eight” and it brought tears to my eyes. It is so great Ian that you feel like the “old Ian” who I hope to meet one day, and your angel of a wife. Ian buddy you see I was born with Cerebral Palsy, and I too need help with daily things. The way you can fight and overcome your injury is Godly. Not to make you or anyone sad, but I can’t walk. I had the ability when I was younger, but I chose to stop PT back then cause it was all I had control over. Larissa if you see this please save what I am about to type with only my right index finger, cause the others curl inward as I type…. God knew what he was doing when He brought you back buddy, as you know. However, He also knew you needed some to love you without conditions. Your “wifey” knows how to care for you better then any caregiver ever will, but you knew that to I bet. My name is Donald or Donny which ever is fine by me, You give me hope one day that I too will find my “wifey” one day. I have Cerebral Palsy buddy cause by lack of oxygen to my brain. I was dead for 10 to 15 minutes, but our Farther in heaven brought me back. Know this “I” Donald your brother in Christ loves you very much. Always! Donald Kirby

  12. I first heard your story when your video was featured on desiringgod. I read your blog because both of you inspire and encourage me in my own walk with God. I’m so happy the surgery was a success. I wish you two the best and I look forward to reading your book.
